Purpose
The Howard Family Scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding students who have demonstrated leadership potential and to facilitate the ability of these students to attend the University of Kansas.

Sponsor
The Howard Educational Foundation sponsors the scholarship program. The directors of the foundation are Jay and Julia Howard (Austin, Texas) and Jan Howard Denning (Salina). Jan and Jay are graduates of Salina Central High School and Kansas University. Their parents, Jack and Shirley Howard, are also graduates of Salina High School and KU.

Awards
The sponsor will award up to three $3,500 scholarships in 2010. These are nonrenewable scholarships and will be paid directly to KU during the student's first year of college. Scholarship recipients may combine this award with other scholarship funds provided by KU or other organizations.

Eligibility
This scholarship is available to any high school senior attending Salina Central, Salina South or Sacred Heart who (i) has at least a 3.0 GPA, (ii) has an ACT score of at least 24 or an SAT score of at least 1090, (iii) has been active in extra-curricular and/or leadership activities, and (iv) has applied for admission to KU. This scholarship is not based on need, although a student's ability to overcome challenging financial circumstances would be a positive factor in the evaluation process.

Selection Process
Applications must be submitted to the student's high school counselor by February 5, 2010. A selection committee of five individuals will evaluate the applications and make the final selections on or before March 5, 2010. Students must submit the following with each application packet:

  1. Completed application to KU, including the scholarship essay (a print-out of a web based application is acceptable.) Please delete or mark out any reference to the applicant's social security number on the KU application form.
  2. Official copy of high school transcript.
  3. Confirmation of ACT or SAT score.
  4. Completed application form and description of activities using the format on this website (www.HowardScholarship.org).
  5. Two letters of recommendation. One of these letters must be from a current or former teacher of the applicant. Both letters should follow the instructions and format of the Letter of Recommendation Form contained in this website. Applicants should either direct their recommendation providers to this website or provide such individuals with a blank copy of the recommendation form. Please note that the individuals writing the letters of recommendation will send the completed letters directly to the sponsor; the applicant will not submit these letters with the rest of the information listed above.

Conditions
All scholarship recipients must (i) graduate from high school, (ii) submit a letter of acceptance no later than June 15, 2010, and (iii) enroll at KU no later than the start of the Fall, 2010 term. If these conditions are not met, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
